Questions to Ask a Personal Injury Lawyer

Last updated 2026-10-20

A checklist of questions for your first consultation so you can compare lawyers and understand fees and next steps.

Before you go

Bring the police report, photos, medical records, bills and any letters from insurers. Write down a short timeline of what happened.

Experience

  • How many cases like mine have you handled?
  • Do you handle these cases in this state and court?
  • Who will actually work on my case day to day?

Fees and costs

  • Do you work on a contingency fee, and what percentage do you take?
  • Who pays case costs such as filing fees and expert witnesses, and when?
  • Will I owe anything if we do not win?
  • Please explain how the fee is calculated on a sample settlement.

Your case

  • What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
  • What is the likely timeline?
  • What are the deadlines I need to know about?
  • How often will you update me, and how can I reach you?

Trust your judgment

A good lawyer will explain things in plain language, answer your questions honestly and not promise a particular result. No lawyer can guarantee an outcome.

Not legal advice. This guide is general information. Laws and deadlines differ by state. Please speak with a licensed attorney about your situation.
